At the heart of this transformation was the CIA’s newly established Directorate of Science and Technology, led by Dr. Bud Wheelon. Tasked with pushing the boundaries of intelligence gathering, this elite team pioneered stealth aircraft development, advanced radar technology, and aerial counterintelligence strategies that would reshape modern warfare. As the CIA repurposed Area 51, it became the center of a covert arms race that remained hidden from public view for decades. Among its most classified operations was the exploitation of Soviet MiG aircraft, allowing U.S. pilots to train against real enemy fighters for the first time. These programs helped turn the tide in the Vietnam War, where U.S. aircraft suffered devastating losses against advanced Soviet-built jets. For nearly a decade after its reconnaissance missions ended, Area 51 remained one of the CIA’s most valuable assets, its activities shrouded in secrecy. Now, with declassified records and firsthand accounts, The Company Business reveals how the CIA’s secret projects at Area 51 influenced global intelligence, military strategy, and the future of aerial warfare. However, NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, including the astronauts, adopted the pronunciation /ˈdʒɛmɪni/, rhyming with "knee." In 1965, NASA's public affairs office declared "Jeh'-mih-nee" as the official pronunciation. This became widely recognized, especially during Gus Grissom’s communications as Houston capsule communicator for Ed White’s historic spacewalk on Gemini 4. From 1964 to 1967, Project Gemini served as a proving ground for advanced spaceflight techniques and astronaut training. Each mission, launched atop the Titan II rocket—a repurposed Cold War missile—pushed the boundaries of human space exploration. The Gemini spacecraft, though similar in appearance to its predecessor, the Mercury capsule, offered significantly enhanced capabilities, facilitating unprecedented achievements in space. Witness the remarkable first American spacewalk by Ed White on June 3, 1965, tethered to the Gemini 4 spacecraft by a 7.6-meter umbilical cord. Relive Buzz Aldrin’s precise maneuvers during his extravehicular activity on Gemini 12. These milestones showcased humanity’s adaptability and set the stage for the lunar missions that followed.

The Central Intelligence Agency, tasked by the US president to learn the war capabilities of the country's Cold War opponents, transitioned from covert operations to a world leader in science and technology at nondescript a venue in the Nevada desert known as Area 51. Starting with the high-flying U-2 surveillance plane in 1955 - a project more highly classified than the Manhattan Project - the CIA endured the radioactive fallout of the atomic proving grounds next door to develop the stealthy 90,000-foot, Mach 3+ A-12: the world's highest, fastest piloted jet plane ever. Acting as a power projection platform, the CIA's Station D at Area 51 deployed its surveillance planes and crews worldwide to overfly war zones and US adversaries. Needing to stay ahead of these adversaries, the CIA continued stealth development and Russian technology exploitation throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. Missions and projects that came out of the facility - many of them secret - shaped international events, as well as relations with allies and enemies. The exploits from that period turned Station D into the high-tech laboratory and flight test facility that it is today.Thornton D. "TD" Barnes first became involved with US intelligence agencies while in the Army during the CIA's Project Palladium. He served with the CIA on special projects at Area 51, and his on-and-off relationship with the agency continues to this day. Barnes currently serves as the president of Roadrunners Internationale, an association of Area 51 CIA, Air Force, and contractor veterans, and is the Director Emeritus of the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame.

"The Company Business (CIA Area 51 Chronicles – Book 3) By TD Barnes The evolution of Area 51. The rise of stealth technology. The CIA’s secret aviation empire. In the aftermath of the U-2 and A-12 reconnaissance programs, the CIA faced an uncertain future in aerial espionage. With the SR-71 Blackbird now under Air Force control, the Agency’s manned reconnaissance efforts appeared to be coming to an end. But instead of fading into history, Area 51 transformed into the most secretive aviation research facility in the world. For decades, the story of Project OXCART remained classified.
