  1. Another tidbit from the Wizards of Area 51: From spy cats to satellites – how the CIA evolved in electronic intelligence harvesting. Operation Acoustic Kitty was a $20M project initiated by the CIA’s new Directorate of Science and Technology in the 1960s, aiming to use cats to spy on the Kremlin and Soviet embassies. The underlying idea was to train and equip felines to become "spy cats" that could eavesdrop on conversations in specific locations, such as parks or cafes.
The cats underwent surgery where an audio recording device, a small radio transmitter, and a thin wire antenna (woven into the cat’s fur) were implanted. A battery was also placed in the chest cavity to power the device. A wire along the spine and to the cat’s tail was the antenna. The Cats were trained to move toward targeted individuals or groups unnoticed, allowing conversations to be recorded or transmitted back to the CIA operatives.
However, the project was ultimately deemed a failure and abandoned after its first live test, where an Acoustic Kitty was released to eavesdrop on two men in a park, but it was tragically hit and killed by a taxi shortly after its release. Fidel Castro was to be one of its first targets.
The existence of Operation Acoustic Kitty remained a classified secret for years until it was eventually declassified and brought to public attention in what the CIA characterized as the “Family Jewels,” where it has since been remembered as one of the more unusual chapters in the history of intelligence operations.
